Royal Mail has added a new dimension to its stamps with the release of the latest of it’s Great British Railways stamps this month. The stamps themselves are really nice to begin with, especially since they have trains on them. They will certainly make a great addition to my trains on stamps collection. But there’s a new technology twist that is unique as far as I know and a first in the stamp collecting world.

Royal Mail is billing these as the world’s first “intelligent stamps”, though in reality the stamps themselves are not the intelligent part.

The Intelligent Stamp is the first to work with image recognition technology, and can be accessed on an iPhone or Android Smartphone via the Junaio application. The app contains a Royal Mail channel which activates the phone’s camera and launches the exclusive online content, featuring Bernard Cribbins reading W H Auden’s poem, The Night Mail.

In essence, the real technology here is image recognition via an iPhone or Android app. Basically, you aim your cell phone’s camera at the stamp, fire up the application, and it will show you a video about the content of the stamp.

The Junaio application is available free of charge in the Android marketplace and through iTunes. The stamps themselves can be purchased through Royal Mail’s ebay store.
